OTDR Handheld Launch Cable Box or Pulse Suppression Box
Introduction:
This OTDR Handheld Launch Cable Box, also known as a pulse suppression box, is designed to be used with an OTDR to eliminate the dead zone. Because the OTDR’s output light is so strong, the burst of light temporarily “blinds” the OTDR’s receiver, temporarily preventing it from being able to detect any faults or events in the fiber under test. This is called the dead zone. The time it takes for the light emitted by the OTDR to pass through the length of fiber inside the launch box provides the detector inside the OTDR sufficient time to recover before seeing the reflected light from the fiber under test. A common analogy for the dead zone is the period of time it takes for your vision to recover after being exposed to a bright flash of light.
Conceptual Usage:
The launch box has two fiber optic leads or legs (multimode or singlemode) with the specified choice of fiber optic connectors. One lead of the launch box will plug into the OTDR, and the other lead will plug into a port or mating sleeve connecting it to the fiber link under test.
Once the OTDR emits a pulse of light a minimum period of time must pass before the OTDR can take meaningful measurements. The minimum time needed will vary depending on the OTDR equipment. Fiberdyne’s pulse suppression box also known as a launch box which is inserted between the OTDR and the fiber under test will provide the time delay. The launch box provides the extra fiber length required for near-end OTDR measurements such as insertion loss and reflectance.
